A surreal comedy on race relations and gender in contemporary Zimbabwe

Written by distinguished young Zimbabwean playwright Blessing Hungwe, this new production has been developed in conjunction with acclaimed British director Agnieszka Piotrowska. Dealing with traumatic historic events through comedy and laughter, the play explores the life and legacy of Mbuya Nehanda, a national icon, and leader of the local uprising against the white settlers at the end of the 19th century. She was hanged in 1896 alongside her revolutionary partner Kaguvi. The two historical figures are believed to be spirit media.
Time travel enables Nehanda to get back to her original historical moment and, with the help of modern technology, she convinces her executioners to re-think their actions…
